EE

Wow. I got on the PBS show, Everyday Edisons (EE), Season 2. I am so excited and blessed. My table-top game was one of the 12 inventions picked from about 10,000, for development, marketing, and production via EE and Bouncing Brain (BB) Productions.

EE

Yesterday, I got a call from Louis Foreman, the head of Enventys and one of the judges for Everyday Edisons (the PBS invention show). He informed me that I am one of the remaining 25 auditioners vying for 12-14 spots for season 2 of EE. I was honored, excited, and in shock. I was also a little discombobulated since the call came during the unpacking chaos of the first day in our new home. So that evening, surrounded by boxes and newspaper, my wife and I drank champagne in front of our first fire and had two great things to celebrate.

EE will be in DC on May 6th, and it will be then and there that they announce those selected for the show. It has been an amazing journey and I anxiously await the final word. No matter what the outcome, I am even more determined than ever to fully pursue my dream of being an inventor.

60. The Washington Post Express Mention March 3, 2007

How is this for the Law of Attraction: on Thursday, I was handed the free Post Express for the first time in months while passing by a metro station. I wondered that it would be cool to have SparkBugg mentioned in the Express.

The next day, I get an email from a friend saying the I was mentioned in the Friday Express. I went out and got a copy, and sure enough, there I was: amazing! Julia Feldmeier wrote a great article. And I may still also be in the Sunday Source.

*

The cover has this written across the top: “Bright Spots: Local inventors – the few, the proud, the paranoid. Page 14″

Page 14 is a full page article titled “Genius in a Bottle: For budding Edisons, the big idea is only a small part of success.

Starting with paragraph 5:

” …most beginners do not understand that an idea is an just an idea.

Matt Fleming [me!] is an exception. At the casting call [for Everday Edisons], the 32-year old Arlington resident played his unpatented tabletop game in plain sight, because, he says, “I don’t have the patience or money to hide my inventions.”

Fleming, a clinical psychologist, is the man behind SparkBugg.com, a blog about ideas, based on his belief that – surprise! – ideas beget more ideas. Which is why he’s not overly concerned about someone stealing his.

Besides, he says, “it needs to be your own baby to really run with it, to really believe in it.”

Thanks to the mention, SparkBugg had it’s best hit day ever, with 155 views beating the old record of 147. See the peak below. Leading up to that day, there had been a steady rise, as well.

Express Stats

Thanks, Julia!

So my wife and I were waiting with our group to go in to the first audition, and she and I decided that we would go first and get it out of the way. We were told we had two minutes to pitch, and one minute to answer their questions.

So, my wife and I went to the Ronald Reagan Building yesterday for the Everyday Edisons auditions. We got there right before registration ended at 1 pm, and were the final taped audition of the night, ending close to midnight.

It went great, in more ways then one. Best of all, my idea is being considered for the show. As far as I can tell, there are no more tryouts. The video clip of my wife and I playing our game will be considered among the rest of those that passed round 2, and a total of about 10 ideas will be chosen for Season 2 of Everyday Edisons (aka EE).

I spontaneously decided to go to Everyday Edision auditions tomorrow, thanks in part to the encouragement of a friend who let me know that certain stars were lining up. So, I don’t have much time to post now, as I am taking care of the finishing touches of my prototype for the audition.

I also am excited to go be around my fellow sparkbuggs, meet a few ideators, share ideas, etc. I am taking the risk of not hiding my idea when I get there. I am actually hoping that the other ideators can help me help the project evolve.

I am ambitiously hoping to hit Home Depot, Micheal’s, Target, Toy-R-Us, and the Sport’s Authority before I even get to the auditions. Then I will build more prototypes there, and if I am able, I hope to catch this on film for posterity.
