59. Stats Mystery Solved (kinda) February 28, 2007

(Warning: this post may be a little bit dull and technical. It is for those interested, as I write about my new adventures in blogging).

As you may recall, I was beginning to get worried that I was losing readers, after a massive spike. My fear is that my content was turning people off, and/or that I was getting boring. Sparkbugg.com’s hit count tended to average about 65 hits a day, then it dropped to about 40 for several days (incidentally, today it came back up to 75). See below.

xxxx

Turns out the massive spike, and the drop may be a result of some search engine change I don’t fully understand. Thanks to Manu for directing me to this link (summary: something about Google now taking into account RSS feeds). Later searching on WordPress.com (which hosts my blogs) indicated that feeds were now being registered differently by WordPress (who provides these data charts) and being more accounted for. See my Feed Stats below:

xsxsx

In summary, WordPress is now accounting for more readers via feeds, so it will take it away from the regular hit count (I think).

For blogging neophtyes like myself, read more about RSS Feeds HERE. I get the basic idea, and will post more about RSS Feeds once: (a) I start using feeds from other sites for my own blog reading; this will include finding what best feed aggregator to use, and (b) making my blogs more RSS feed friendly, mostly by incorporating the appropriate buttons on my sites.

I have been putting this entire RSS thing off out of laziness and feeling intimidated.  But I guess it is time, and I don’t really think it will be all that complicated.

58. SparkBugg Logo February 27, 2007

So my creative brother taught himself Flash and some HTML in the past few weeks.  He started his website, and also helped produce a dynamic logo for future SparkBugg video clips.  How lucky am I.  I told him that the logo is going to look better than the clips themselves.  But again, I am not complaining.

Thanks, Bro.  You rock!

Check out his website and the dynamic (i.e. not static) logo HERE (click on “video”).

57. Washington Post Update February 27, 2007

I got an email from the reporter, asking me to OK a photograph. Not only does it show my wife, but the invention as well, and me looking dorky. Go figure. But I am not complaining. She says it will be the cover story for this week’s Sunday Source. Booya-shacka.

Sunday Source

And Everyday Edisons finished up their final audition (in San Diego), so it could be any day now that they let inventors know if they are going to be on the show. Keeping my fingers crossed and sending out positive vibes.

56. Post Article Delayed February 25, 2007

Turns out the Washington Post article on the Everyday Edisons auditions may have been delayed.  It was not in today’s Sunday Source, as predicted.  Since the Post seems to have put a lot of work into this potential article (photographer and reported on site; reported following up), I doubt it is canceled permanently.   My wife thinks the theme of today’s Source is glamour and beauty, and that matches well with the pending Oscars tonight.

I will let you know if I hear anything more.  Thanks for staying tuned.

Los Angeles – March 19th
San Francisco – March 25th
Chicago – March 30th
New York City – April 4th
Orlando – April 9th
Houston, TX – April 13th

54. David Brent Music Video February 23, 2007

I just found this clip today, and it is near perfect for me. Why? Because it is of David Brent (Ricky Gervais) from the original The Office (British Version), someone who I think is a comedic genius, AND the clip is a music video, which I have been making myself lately. Check it out below; it is pretty funny (and 4 min long).

53. The Secret on Youtube February 23, 2007

Today is 2/23. My video on Youtube has close to 5000 views so far, since 2/10 (see it HERE).

(My interest in The Secret) + (my budding video editing hobby) + (The Secret hype) + (Oprah) + (Youtube) = (5000 views of a SparkBugg production).

OK, so all those views have not really resulted in the massive increase of traffic to SparkBugg (so I may have to have cautious expectations of any potential Washington Post referrals), but I am still grateful. Several people have subscribed to my videos, the clip has a pretty high rating, I am proud of it and continue to watch it myself, and I got this touching video response, from an inspiring young man who happens to be paralyzed at this moment:

52. Washington Post Follow-up February 23, 2007

So I spoke with the nice reporter from the Washington Post again. She had follow-up questions that I tried to answer as I walked Barkley. Wow. What if I, and/or SparkBugg, am actually found in the article?

I also had to make presumptuous demands on the reporter: (1) Since my idea is not protected, I requested that they please don’t publish any pictures of it, and only refer to it as a “table-top game.” This counsel was given to me by Bouncing Brains.

and (2) Please don’t include any pictures of my wife. She is a clinical psychologist, and is worried what it would be like if some of her patients saw her picture. I am also a clinical psychologist, and have similar concerns, but I will deal with it if I am fortunate enough to get my picture in the Post.

So we will see: hopefully I will be in the Post this Sunday morning (2/25), in the Sunday Source. I will be grateful for even one sentence, but I will imagine and hope for a few paragraphs and a photograph.

Look how sporadic.  Regardless, there are more visitors, overall, than I have expected.  So again, I am grateful, and will plan to post more frequently in here.

FeStats

This is curious to me: the huge spike on 2-18 for an unclear reason, then a big drop that has been continuing the past few days. Perhaps it is simply an anomaly demonstrating regression to the mean, but I also am a little worried. Maybe this is a result of one of my postings or because I haven’t been as prolific lately (due mostly to my new and growing hobby of video editing).

But, I am positive: I am grateful for the visitors I have, and I will resume more frequent postings.
