13. I am liking the looks of things October 30, 2006

I have to give credit to Ben Gillbanks at Binary Moon, for creating this gorgeous and smart theme, Regulus. The tab clarity and placement, color options, header choices and beauty, and easy-to-read font make this a close to perfect theme. I only wish the hyperlinks were more obvious, and the background font was a little darker.

Sadly, I am reading in places that wordpress may not allow Adsense or Amazon affiliates. We will have to wait and see if there are further larger implications (i.e. emmigrating to Typepad).

Today, got around to writing the first 5 posts. Very exciting, to be started on Sparkbugg.com. Turns out that within a few hours of me intitiating my first post, one of my best friends had his first baby, a boy (yay, Lincoln! welcome to the world!); and another best friend baptized her first baby, a girl (yay, Grace! Welcome to heaven!). Funny how life can work that way.

Also, incidentally: i finally got my DC License a few days ago – to now be allowed to call myself a clinical psychologist… and end to all this preparation.

In hopes that i could devote a lot of time to this and work as a therapist part time, Bugggirl and i spent last night trying to figure that out: Amazon affiliates, Adsense, Text-link-ads. The latter two seem confusing, so it will take some time. I am excited about the Amazon affiliate, because they will have a lot of products i will review and discuss.

I posted on Productdose a week ago (link to posting). Last night, i wanted to see if “sparkbugg” came up on Google, but the only thing that did was that comment, so i went to check it out. turns out, my profile had 61 views. exciting, but i realized that i missed potential referrals (bc the profile has a field to list my website) to the blog (which is not yet really begun). so my plan is to get the logo and blog started, before i comment and post more on other sites.

Reviewed the mission statement and FAQ tonight to solidify it. I’m realizing the difficulty of translating ones passion into a few sentences that will enlighten others about this journey. Ah, the art of editing: Lessons from my college English professor ring in my mind, “Show, Don’t Tell,” “Be Brief,” and “Turn Passive into Active.” Now that we’ve got some of the basics down, we will move ahead with the actual posts. My task will be to support my husband as he writes and begin to market and sell this blog. We’ve also begun to realize the potential time committment involved here so we are beginning to dream of being able to actually do this more than in between work and play. Hence, a next step will be to learn more about advertising…..found this great site, Problogger.net which I think will help us learn how to generate some income from this endeavor. Ah, so much to do, so little time. Welcome to the world of blogging, huh? -BuggGirl

I wrote and added the Mission statement (in About Sparkbugg.com) and the FAQ. It was hard, but ultimately helpful to push forward and come up with a tentative and general map of this journey.

I also went to the library and got a lot of books on branding and blogging, so I can read what the experts have to say about all this. (Now, the public library; that is a great idea).

I am also trying to do a little something everyday, since i think daily work will be the life of a successful blogger. Time for me to exercise that wimpy discipline muscle of mine.

The NEXT blog has been named: Sparkbugg.com. Sparkbug.com was taken, and I emailed the owner of the site, after seeing that it was unused the the last 5 years. She said it wasn’t for sale, and that she has plans for it. Oh, well. I think that I like the two g’s better for now, anyway, for branding purposes.

I am beginning to doubt myself and the process. So I guess it is time to start. I am going to begin with the mission statement for Sparkbugg.com. I am sure that it will take several drafts. I have time.

This is another video, again by my brother, originally on Grouper.com (was very simple to post, thanks to the WordPress/Grouper collaboration). The video clip is 3 minutes long; staring Mark and Heather; Song is “Someone else’s life,” by Joshua Radin.

A little background: Mark actually met Heather on a bench overlooking the Pacific sunset, from Santa Monica. Hence, this video is “The Other Story.”

Yay! Erin and I registered our first domain name together: Sparkbugg.com! (I purchased the never used Pasidon.com about 5 years ago).

$19 for 2 years via http://www.godaddy.com. See how easy it was via this tubetorial video on domain purchasing. It also came with a free email account. I plan to forward the url to my NEXT blog, here on WordPress.

Small break, but i am back. I need to exercise my discipline muscle. They say that a blog is like a shark…if it stops moving, it will die.

I was inspired to return thanks to a podcast by Seth Godin (check it out on Odeo). That took me to his blog, which took me to his Book: Unleashing the Ideavirus. Incidentally, it seems to be about what is exactly the motivation behind my NEXT blog. The Amazon link refered me to another book, The Anatomy of Buzz. I may have to read that, too.

This is a small, experimental music video from my brother (of our family at the Getter Center in LA). He likes to try new things, too. Make sure you can hear the music. (fyi..posting this was incredibly easy)
